Guide - Psychology of PHV Ride Hailing Customers *Updated 12 Nov 2024

A quick step by step walkthrough for people who wish to become a PHV driver in Singapore; hope it helps you :)

Psychology of Customers:

There are a few ways to find / determine the demand hotspot areas for PHV customers.

(1) Using the app heat map / demand hotspot function to locate hotspot areas

(2) By experience, based on locations & time of the day

Understand the psychology of customers to know at which hour of the day, where the customers will be at, and thus, you will know where to find your preferred hotspots to plan your daily journey, based on the time of the day and the day of the week:

Moving from Home to Workplace (CBD, hospitals, industrial areas, schools, universities, government buildings, malls etc) –

For example, think about when the customers will move from Home to Workplace and where the high demand hotspots will be

~ Morning Peak hours (0600-0930)

Then think about where/which are the locations/regions where people will move to their workplace

Residential areas to workplace locations like Central Business District (CBD), industrial, factory areas

Hence, it’s less likely to find customers in workplace locations like CBD etc, during the morning peak hours because customers are not coming out from there, but moving into there.

Therefore, you want to drive out of these workplace locations, like CBD etc, during morning peak hours to find booking requests, if you are not receiving them

Lunch hours (1200-1330) – Workplace to lunch, Returning to Workplace

Higher demand in CBD areas, office areas etc.

Populated lunching areas/regions -

  • CBD area (office workers going to lunch)

  • Orchard area (Tourists having lunch and moving around)

  • Bugis area

  • Chinatown area

Workplace to home – Evening peak hours (5pm – 8pm)

Higher demand in workplace areas like Central Business District (CBD) as compared to residential areas

Home to Shopping, Shopping to Home (Good for non-peak hours)

Think about when/the hours that people will go to shop and the likely regions where the pickup points will be at

For example, morning hours before 10am, Orchard Rd may be more empty and has less demand so you don’t want to circle around there

You might want to wait until after 10am to go there to find passengers

Think about where the populated shopping areas are –

Mustafa, Little India, Orchard Road, Bugis Area, Bencoolen Temple Area, Residential areas’ shopping malls (Vivocity, Waterway point etc.)

Going to airport

You may want to set your final destination feature/function to changi airport, so as to pick up passengers going to the airport, and then fetch a new passenger from the airport back for good earnings / profits.

Because there are always people needing to go to the airport for their flights, at all times of the day.

Weekends –

Many people are not working, so the demand in the CBD area is relatively low.

People usually go out shopping with family or friends or to visit them.

Therefore, during weekends, you will not want to go into the CBD area, or other workplace regions.

You may want to focus on the residential areas OR shopping districts/areas/regions (Orchard Rd, Little India, Chinatown etc.) instead :)
