Guide - PHV Driver's Earnings' Expectations *Updated 10 Nov 2024

Updated: Nov 18, 2024

A quick step by step walkthrough for people who wish to become a PHV driver in Singapore; hope it helps you :)

Wages / Earnings:

Approximately ~$20-$30 per hour (sometimes slightly more than $30/h during good days/festive season)

How much you earn is mainly based on the hard work that you put in, techniques/strategies + your experience of being a PHV driver

The minimum requirement per day that you need to achieve is to cover your own car costs / rental costs + petrol

Thus, the lower the rental costs and the higher the petrol discount that you can get, is better

Full time driving (hardcore)  0600 am – 1000 pm  (1 hour lunch), around 15 working hours daily, non-stop (except lunch hours)

Going by $20 / hour earnings, $300 per day, no rest days –  $9000 per month

After deducting petrol & car costs (rental or bought), its around – $6k per month

Going by $30 / hour earnings, $450 per day, no rest days ~ $13,500 per month,

After deducting petrol & car costs (rental/bought), its around ~ $9k per month

Full time driving (normal)

0600-0630am to ~1530-1600 pm (8-9 working hours / day) morning peak hours

1030am – 1100am to ~1930-2000pm (8-9 working hours / day) evening peak hours

8 working hours + 1 hour lunch, you can choose whether to capture the morning peak hours or the evening peak hours, based on your own preferences, depending on whether you earn more from which

0600-0630am to 0900-1000am (4 hours max)

1630-1700pm to 1930-2030pm (4 hours max)

Or you can choose to capture both peak hours and take a rest in the middle of the day

In this way, you can maximize your earnings from both peak hours while spending time in the middle of the day to do what you want.

Going by $30 / hour earnings, $240 per day, no rest - $7200 per month, 1 day rest each week - $960 = $6160 per month, 2 days rest - $5200 per month

After deducting petrol & car costs (rental or bought), its around $2.5k – 5k per month

Part time driving / Side hustle (Student / Extra income (before/after work) )

Part-timers usually focus on earning enough to pay for their car costs /rental costs + petrol

Depending on your car rental costs / car costs, if it is around ~$85 daily, and by the rate ~$30 per hour earnings during peak hours, you will need to drive around 3 hours during the peak hours to cover your car and petrol costs.

Morning peak hours 0600 to 1000am

Evening peak hours 1700pm to 2000pm

You can choose within these hours, the number of hours that you wanna drive and decide on how much you wanna earn freely.

Your profits will be based on the number of hours that you work, deducting the ~3 hours that you need to drive to cover your car + petrol costs

Extra income (after work)

You can also drive after work till the midnight driving hours for extra bucks

On top of the base earnings, ride hailing platform APP’s monthly cash incentives, fuel vouchers/discounts, new joiner incentives/bonuses may provide up to thousands of dollars of extra/additional earnings, depending on your own efforts.

The above may not be achieved if you are new to PHV driving, so don’t join the APP that you desire/choose immediately; try out the other ride hailing APP that you did not choose first, to familiarize yourself with PHV driving first so that you can have a good chance of obtaining the NEW joiner incentives / bonuses :)

*How much you should expect to earn is also based on your personal discipline, towards your work. If you have low discipline, you may be frequently stopping your work to have a drinks with friends, or taking more rest / off-days or working less hours daily and in turn, resulting in lower earnings/wages.

*Regardless of how much you wanna earn, always remember to consider your health and avoid ‘burnouts’. If you feel that you need a break sometimes, take a rest and let your body recover first before continuing to work :)

Wages/Earnings expectations compared to other jobs (Admin/Retail/Sales/Security/Manufacturing/Service Sector)

Other jobs such as Admin/Retail/Sales may have a similar / lower starting pay as compared to being a PHV driver, depending on how much hard work you put in.

As mentioned earlier, if you go all the way (hardcore style, 16 hours per day), you can earn up to $9k or more per month which entails you with a higher starting pay than many other jobs but most PHV drivers work the normal 8~9 hours per day and earn around $3-$4k per month, which is about the same as the others jobs in admin/retail/sales/security.

The drawbacks of being a PHV driver as compared to other jobs is that, your pay ceiling/upper limit is capped while the other jobs mentioned, the pay may be higher when you reach the management level or a higher position.

There’s also no career progression, and there’s always a limit (to what) you can earn.

Pros & cons of becoming a PHV driver as compared to other jobs (earnings/lifestyle)

Pros:

Flexible working hours, self employed

Flexible working days, can choose whether to work 5 days a week, 6 days a week or daily

Free car transport for self and family

Don’t need to stand for long hours (but sitting for long hours may not be good for your thighs as well, should take a break sometimes to stand up and walk about)

Cons:

Long working hours if wanna earn more, less family time, need to wake up early, go home late etc.

Possibility of conflicts with difficult customers that may go viral

Higher risks of accidents which may endanger your own life due to long working hours on the road

Higher risks of damage to car if you are initially unfamiliar with the roads you are driving at

Possible sense of embarrassment when meeting friends/relatives/family (If you need an excuse > doing it for extra cash / part time work / to supplement your existing income)
